Is anyone here a doctor?

Doc Savage (fictional character), whose real name is Clark Savage, Jr., is a physician, surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and musician — a renaissance man. A team of scientists assembled by his father trained his mind and body to near-superhuman abilities almost from birth, giving him great strength and endurance, a photographic memory, mastery of the martial arts, and vast knowledge of the sciences. Doc is also a master of disguise and an excellent imitator of voices[...]

He resides on the top (86th) floor of a New York City skyscraper, implicitly the Empire State Building, reached by Doc's private high-speed elevator. Doc owns a fleet of cars, trucks, aircraft, and boats which he stores at a secret hangar on the Hudson River, under the name The Hidalgo Trading Company, reached from his home by a pneumatic-tube system called the "flea run." He sometimes retreats to his Fortress of Solitude in the Arctic—which pre-dates Superman's similar hideout of the same name. All of this is paid for with gold from a Central American mine given to him by the local Mayans in the first Doc Savage story.

Shaken, not stirred.

Scientists, specifically biochemists, and martini connoisseurs have investigated the difference between a martini shaken and a martini stirred. According to a study at the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Western Ontario in Canada to determine if the preparation of a martini has an influence on their antioxidant capacity, the shaken gin martinis were able to break down hydrogen peroxide and leave only 0.072% of the peroxide behind, versus the stirred gin martini which left behind 0.157% of the peroxide.[7] The study was done at the time because moderate consumption of alcohol appears to reduce the risk of cataracts, cardiovascular disease, and stroke, none of which afflict the fictional James Bond.

Prior to the 1960s, vodka was, for the most part, refined from potatoes (usually cheaper brands). This element made the vodka oily. To disperse the oil, Bond ordered his martinis shaken; thus, in the same scene where he orders the martini, he tells the barman about how vodka made from grain rather than potatoes makes his drink even better.

Other reasons for shaking tend to include making the drink colder or as Bond called it, ice-cold. Shaking allows the drink to couple with the ice longer thus making it far colder than if it were to be stirred. Shaking is also said to dissolve the vermouth better making it less oily tasting.[11]

Perhaps a clue to the habit is in chapter five of "Moonraker", which preceded "Diamond's are Forever". As a spy, Bond is used to drinking in marginal places. This taught Bond that the fusil oil (formaldehyde) in bad liquor can be settled out. In "Moonraker" pepper is used for straight vodka. A shaken vodka martini allows lemon peel to do the same, but it has to be shaken to make sure the fusil oil is not pushed aside by the organics of the vermouth.

i'm sick of rap titles.

A rather confident 007 walks into a bar and takes a seat next to a very attractive woman. He gives her a quick glance, then casually looks at his watch for a moment.

The woman notices this and asks, "Is your date running late?"

"No", he replies, "I am here alone. Q has just given me this state-of-the-art watch and I was just testing it."

The intrigued woman says, "A state-of-the-art watch? What's so special about it?"

"It uses alpha waves to telepathically talk to me," he explains.

"What's it telling you now?"

"Well, it says you're not wearing any panties..."

The woman giggles and replies, "Well it must be broken because I am wearing panties!"

007 taps, taps his watch and says "Damn thing must be an hour fast!"

with the spider.....

Euophrys omnisuperstes (the specific name means standing above everything) is a small black jumping spider that lives at elevations of up to 6,700 meters on Mount Everest, making it possibly the highest known permanent resident on earth. They are known to lurk in crevices among rocky debris. Their diet remains a mystery; few explorers to Mount Everest have found any other significant signs of organic or plant life. It probably lives as a scavenger, feeding on insects that are transported up there by the wind and then freeze to death. (wikipedia)
This is probably what it looks like (related spider):

on a recent Everest climb, there was this guy David Sharp. He was climbing solo and apparently refused some help early on. he ended up in trouble in a rock alcove, and he was passed by a couple of climbers, but apparently was so far gone that it was impossible to get him up and functional, and at that height many people agree that it is basically impossible to get a non-cooperating body down the descent. he died in this rock cave, famous for housing "Green Boots," a dead Indian climber. here is a picture of Green Boots, taken 10 years after his death.

...all the kids that download this for free...

http://www.seeqpod.com/ searches the internet for mp3's that people have uploaded to their websites for various reasons. you can listen to them for free. if you're a bit creative, you can also download them : )

X

you know, although i am often very busy with studying etc, i also do a fair amount of sitting around doing nothing or wasting time. maybe i should buy an xbox 360 and actually let myself play halo 3? especially with gross weather, biking isn't alot of fun, whereas sitting on my ass and shooting things is.

or maybe i should do something more productive?

i'm hearin voices...

Oliver Sacks, a Neurologist, recently published his latest book "Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain," where he discusses things such as music's ability to provide some symptomatic relef for Alzheimer's patients, the persistence of musical ability despite severe amnesia, the phenomenon of synesthesia, etc. I heard an interview with him on NPR last weekend while driving down to Wichita. One of the things he talked about on the show was "musical hallucination," in which people hear music that isn't there. For the first time, I have a possible explanation for something that happened to me a long time ago (other than being purely crazy). It was while I was in middle school, and I was laying on the floor of my bedroom doing homework, when all of a sudden I heard Billy Corgan (of the Smashing Pumpkins) say "The World is a Vampire" from that song (Bullet With Butterfly Wings(?)). The radio was off, and there was no other feasible source of the sound. So, either I was temporarily insane, there was a ghost in my room, or I had a single instance of Musical Hallucination (which probably places me into the first category anyway).

Anyway, that is all.
